As most of my friends and family will tell you I am a HUGE fan of the Friday the 13th series, campy horror movies in general, really. I will admit that when I heard they were remaking the series I was skeptical, but I got over that quick.
Nervously, I went and saw the recent remake of one of my favorite movie series of all time. Going into the theater I knew not to set my expectations high. I had been told by friends a couple things that I may be disappointed with the “New” Jason Voorhees. I was ready for this movie to suck and suck hard. I was very pleased that it was bad in the best kinda way.
From the very start of the movie, I was happy to see that no computers were used in the making of these special effects, or at least overly used. I seriously was worried that this movie would be wrought with floating CG heads, fuzzy severed limbs, and crappy computer green screening. From the very first death scene, my fears started to wain. Mommy dearest’s head getting lopped off was a simple dummy with a rubber head. Don’t get me wrong it still looked “good” relative to the movie. If there were any actual green screen use in this movie other than settings.
Worry number two: how would things change since Jason was not going to be played by legendary stuntman, and previous Jason actor, Kane Hodder? This go round Jason was played by Derek Mears, who you may or may not know play(ed) Kane in the WWE. He is probably about as big as [actor]Kane but he played a much more mobile and agile Jason. In this version of the movie, Jason seems to have gotten the “Zombie Upgrade” that has been going around most horror movies recently. I didn’t know what to think the first time I saw Jason literally RUN after his victim. However, after seeing him chase down a couple people, I think I can now say I approve. The only thing that I would have nixed in the movie was the fact that Jason shot a bow and arrow a little TOO efficiently, hitting a moving target in the head at quite a distance.
The usual 80’s horror movie cliches were all present and accounted for. Douche bag boyfriend, check. Hot innocent girlfriend, check. Dorky Asian guy, check. The token black guy that ends up being comic relief, check. Titties a jiggling, pot smoking, underage drinking, premarital sex…. check. It’s no wonder Jason killed em all, I mean he was just trying to clean up the camp from all these damn kids. If he talked he probably would have just told them to collectively “Get off his lawn.” I guess since he can’t really talk he just did the next best thing to him, which unfortunately for the kids is, KILL!
There is a plot, that is about all I will say about it, don’t want to spoil anything… well actually there isn’t much to say at all, I mean it is a horror movie. Any fan will tell you that the only reason for another Jason movie is just to have fun laughing at the crazy ways he likes to kill.
All in all the movie lived up to exactly what I expected it to be. On a scale of Friday the 13th’s between Part 1 and Jason Goes To Hell… I would put it somewhere in the middle. It for sure isn’t the best of the series, but it damn sure ain’t Jason Goes To Hell, ugh what a horrible movie.
As a little postscript to this review, I am now worried about simply the title of the next movie, should they ever make it. Unless I miss my guess the next one will be #13 that has had Jason in the title, that is if you don’t skip the couple that was made without the “Friday the 13th” moniker on it. So if they truly are making the next one, what could they name it? Hopefully not “Friday the 13th Part 2” I mean they already did that, and technically the remake was both parts one and two combined. I was also told that they might bring Tommy Jarvis back into the series, but like I said before if it ain’t Corey Feldman, I ain’t down with it. Just something to think about…
