“Devil’s Rock” Writer/Director – Paul Campion’s Horror Movie List

photo

Last year I reviewed a movie The Devil’s Rock for my marathon, and really enjoyed it. The writer and director of the film, Paul Campion, was nice enough to write up a short list of his favorite movies, and why.

My top horror films – sorry, I couldn’t do just 10:

1. Alien – Just the perfect sci-fi horror movie in every way.  The single biggest inspiration of my career.

Then all equal place (I had to do more than 10, sorry!) Exorcist –  Slow burn serious, one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

American Werewolf in London – Simple but perfect storytelling, the greatest werewolf transformation in history.

The Thing – Moody, atmospheric and the physical effects haven’t been bettered since.

Jaws –  Film making at it’s finest, the combination of story, script, character and all brought together to perfection by incredible directing.

Rosemary’s Baby – Funny, creepy as hell, and one of the best endings of all time.

Evil Dead (original) –  Brutal and raw and funny and gory and once again all practical effects.

Evil Dead 2 – The greatest horror comedy of all time.

The Vanishing (original) – Slow, creepy, brooding.  Psychological horror at it’s best.

Blade 2 – My favourite martial arts/vampire/action cross over.  Guillermo del Toro knocks it out of the park visually.  Just such a fun ride.

The Omen (original) – Another combination of simple story, great characters and acting, and so well directed.

Re-Animator – Low budget, totally over the top insane horror comedy.  No one has ever done HP Lovecraft better and probably never will.
