Disney Infinity – BOOM SON!

I make no excuses for my love of video games. Likewise, I make no excuses for my love of the Activision game “Skylanders; Spyro’s Adventure”. If I had to wager a guess, Disney Infinity looks to take both of those guilty pleasures and expand on them tenfold.

My interest in Skylanders initially started off as just an excuse to get my son, who was three at the time, interested in video games. What came out of that was a full blown addiction, for both of us,  to the little toys as well as the world they lived in. I just looked at my time spent in the game today, and as it sits now, between my son and I we have clocked in over 143 HOURS in game. Granted the original Skylanders is almost two years old at this point, but that’s still an insane amount of time.

Looking ahead to the summer release of Disney Infinity, I have already started to consider time lost in that game. Even at this moment, I am hunting down auctions on eBay of Skylander figures (of which we have them all) to sell to pay for Infinity. I can’t wait to see my son’s imagination grow every time he plays Infinity.

The biggest draw for me is that I will get to spend that much more time with my son, doing something that I love and thoroughly enjoy doing, playing video games. However, where Skylanders was something new I had to introduce and explain to my son, Infinity will be relatively familiar to him from the jump. He has seen many of the movies that Infinity (currently) pulls from and is familiar with a very wide cast of characters. It will be interesting to see him take what he knows about the movie properties and apply it to his game play.

This says nothing of the limitless potential (Infinite Potential?) of the “Toy Box” feature of the game. Playing through the regular story missions found within each play set will unlock a myriad of items to use in a completely customizable world of the Toy Box. Create a world that combines elements of Toy Story, Wreck-It-Ralph, and even Tron. Not only can the player already use announced characters like Sully, and Captain Jack, but the player can use “Power Discs” to completely change the look and feel of the level created on the fly. This is something that greatly excites me. Whatever my son dreams up, we can potentially create inside the Toy Box.

Disney Infinity may not be the game that most would consider a “must have” but for me, this game is easily my most anticipated game of the summer. Coming out August 18th to basically ALL current gen consoles. Figures, playsets, and the like can be used on all platforms interchangeably. I look forward to seeing what this game has in-store, and what my son and I can create.

Here is a video of the Executive Producer (John Vignocchi) showing off the game to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Gerstmann.
