House Of The Dead: OVERKILL “Extended Cut” (PS3)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the reason I will more than likely buy a Playstation Move. Yup, House of the Dead. Not KillZone 3. Not Socom 3. A House of the Dead game. I know, it’s kinda surprising to me too.

Most gamers out there are fully aware of the House of the Dead franchise, as it’s been around since the late 90’s. Not known so much for being a great series, graphically, or for it’s game play. It’s not because it is a light-gun-zombie-kill-a-thon either. House of the Dead is known for the over the top cheese factor involved in almost ever piece of it’s story.

Think of that first scene in Resident Evil. “It may come in handy, if you “The master of unlocking” need it.” Take that one scene, that one line read, and extrapolate it into a full length game. Then you might have some idea of what House of the Dead is like. So you can now imagine why it’s also a bit strange that the series actually HAS survived this long. I mean, fifteen years is a long LONG time for a game series to run, not to mention four core titles and at least five spin off games.

The last game in the series was House of the Dead: Overkill for the Wii in 2009. Not really a ground breaking title for the Wii or for House of the Dead really. What it did do, however, was push the boundaries of what storytelling and dialog is all about in games. I dare say that there is no other title on the Wii that had more swear words, period. I was like playing a game that starred Sam Jackson and Mel Gibson had been on a bender, and then got called to out to stop crime.

Overkill is one of those games that is great to break out when a friend is over and just wants to have a little fun. Unfortunately the Wii kinda held back HOTD a little. The controls never felt precise enough that you didn’t have to think about them. You were always adjusting and trying to figure out where your reticule was. Hopefully this will be solved with the more precise nature of the Playstation Move.

As the Press Release put it so well

The mutant-massacring B-movie blood fest, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL – Extended Cut™ is presented for the first time in full HD with 3D support and PlayStation®Move compatibility on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. This gruesome shooter puts you in the middle of a mutant outbreak in Bayou County. With all seven stages of the original re-mastered and two brand new scenarios added, the ‘baddest’ just got bigger!

If that doesn’t sell it for you how about a quote from a dude at SEGA named “Gary Knight”. If you can’t trust this guy, who can you trust?

“The House of the Dead: OVERKILL – Extended Cut for the PlayStation®3 system will send players to the shrieking mad heart of mutant mayhem. This time we went further, faster and bloodier than before. We extended everything, even the title.” – Said Gary Knight of SEGA.

I know, it still seems dumb that I am looking forward to playing this game more than the other high profile titles that use the move, but oh well. I don’t think any of those other titles are full of as much schlock and just raw un-cut fun as House of the Dead: OVERKILL.

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL – Extended Cut is due for release October 28, 2011, in Europe, and October 25 in the United States.
