So today I was called out for making a joke in poor taste. I am more than willing to attack movies deservedly so when they are bad. However, I made a joke that was more personal against an actress in a movie. ( I will not name names or retell said joke) I have since edited the review and made sure that my apology was made sincerely.
This brings up an important thing about reviewing games and movies and other public mediums, accountability. When I was first contacted by the Director, my instant reaction was one of aggression and defense. I did not respond, however, in that state of mind. Reading over what I wrote, and thinking further about it, I could totally see where I was completely in the wrong.
I made a mistake in judgment and have since corrected it. The internet needs this kind of check every now and then. Someone to come in, call out a person, and if they can’t back up what they said, or prove that it was justifiably written, they should have to change it.
Making a personal attack against someone, even if you think it is harmless and no one would ever see it, is wrong. The person writing the “review” of someone’s performance has every right to critique it as such, a performance. No one really has the right to judge someone based solely on something like a person’s appearance. Reviewers are sometimes quick to forget that the people they are breaking down often see the things they write and take them to heart.
That all being said, I will continue to review movies, games, music, and anything I feel I have a strong enough opinion about to write it down. The “Bullshit Movie Of The Week” category will continue. Calling out a shitty movie for having crap production, writing and acting is something people should be held accountable for. It lets all parties involved know their mistakes and helps (in some cases) they improve upon them. Calling out an actor/actress for a superficial flaw in her appearance is not, and we, as reviewers, should be held accountable for said action.
If the person that I made a joke about should ever read this, know that I was in the wrong, and you have every right to be upset. I don’t see this post as a sign of weakness or me caving to the pressure of some movie director. This is a sign of me seeing that I was wrong and doing my best to fix a situation that I never should have ended up in.
