I will try my best to stay away from jokes about reflecting on what I have seen… well except that one I guess.
#11 Mirrors
Mirrors is a movie about a Cop, played by Kiefer Sutherland, trying to deal with killing another cop on accident, and an apparent drinking problem, as well as being separated from his wife and kids. Pretty much how a LOT of horror movies start out. Anyway, he takes a job working as the night watchman at a burnt down department store that used to be a mental institution (now if that doesn’t set off you plot point alarm, check your pulse). Turns out there is something behind all the mirrors in the store and they are killing people. It’s up to him to solve the mystery in order to save himself and his family. Much like all the other movies that I have ever watched, I went into this one with the preconception that I knew where it would take me and how. I was right, however much to my surprised, I enjoyed the trip. I can’t really put my finger on why this movie is good. The blocking is decent, the sound was pretty good, the effect were adequate and Kiefer is great. The rest of the movie was just your average run of the mill horror movie. I knew where the story was going before it ever lead me there. I guess over the years I have learned to pick up on the subtle hints that writers drop early on that make most people say “Oh now I get it” by the end of the movie. I just don’t have an explanation why I liked this movie. It was just good. There are highs and lows to this movie, much like others in the horror genre. At it’s lowest point, Kiefer’s character tells his wife to quote “stay away from the water because it shows a reflection.” Really? Thanks Bill Nye the Science Guy! I had no idea that water had such mystical properties. One of the high points was the ending. Maybe because I have such a love of a good stinger at the end, or the fact that it reminded me of the old “Twilight Zone” twist ending. You can probably figure it out if you think hard enough, but I won’t spoil it outright. Either way, this movie was well worth the watch. I am very glad that it was on my list. I would put it in the top five of the movies I have watched so far.
