Review: “A Fantastic Fear of Everything”

It’s early yet, and I know I have a lot of other movies to get through, but I’m gonna tentatively say that this is “the one” for this year.

Jack is a writer. He has been researching subject matter for his next project and has fallen victim to his own obsession. Jack has been researching Victorian-era murderers and serial killers. He knows all of them and has an intricate knowledge of what they did to their victims, how they chose them, and how they got away with their crimes for as long as they did. This has caused Jack to believe that he himself is next on the hit-list of any number of serial killers he has dreamt up. It’s taken a toll on his health, and on his mental state to the point that he can barely function any longer. However, having said all that, Jack’s fears of all things outside of his control are nothing compared to his fear of the laundrette.

The one thing that Jack doesn’t have is any prospective jobs, however. He has shopped around his “Decades of Death” but no one seems to want to take him up on the project. That is until one final producer offers to meet with him (through his publicist/agent). Jack needs to clean up and get his act together so that he can look well for the meeting. The problem is that he needs to get his clothes cleaned and the only way for him to do that is to go to the laundrette. This kicks off a sequence of events that have been plaguing Jack his entire life.

I just want to put this upfront, this isn’t so much of a “horror movie” as it is a “thriller”. Sure it’s about serial killers and fear of them, but it’s more psychological. Not a knock against it, just a differentiator I wanted to clarify. Having said that, I am super glad that it ended up on my radar and that I have now seen it. Simon Pegg [Jack] is so good in this movie. Honestly, the entire cast is great, really. It’s well written, being funny in the right spots, and a bit of (as previously stated) psychological horror when it’s needed to remind the viewer what they are actually watching. This is a movie that feels like it could be an off-shoot of the “Cornetto Trilogy” and not really feel out of place.

I would highly recommend a viewing of this one for any fan of a bit of horror and thriller. It’s not gory in any way, and it really only has a few jump-scare moments. I enjoyed it enough to look up other movies the director has done… which coincidentally enough is another horror movie with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
