Review: “Attack Of The 50ft Cheerleader”

Very few of the movies I have reviewed so far would fit into the “Classic Drive-In” style of horror movies. Attack Of The 50ft Cheerleader may be the first, and not totally devoid of value either. Though sadly, I did NOT get to see it in 3D.

Cassie Stratford is an ordinary looking girl attending Iron Coast University. She is very intelligent and part of a group creating a new drug that will change the world by making “ugly women attractive”. Cassie would also like to impress her mother by making the cheer-leading squad and being accepted into her mothers sorority as a “legacy”. Unfortunately, Cassie isn’t very good looking (according to the movie, not my opinion) and not coordinated enough to be on the cheer squad. That is, until she injects herself with the experimental drug she helped develop.

Literally overnight, Cassie blossoms into a beautiful, busty, confident girl that goes out and makes the other girls hyper jealous. Things are going just fine for Cassie until some of the side-effects from her drug kick in. Mainly the fact that she keeps getting bigger and bigger. Her closest friends attempt to create an antidote and bring her back to normal. Unfortunately for Cassie, the man in charge of the pharmaceutical company they were developing the drug for, wants Cassie to run tests on her.

Attack Of The 50ft Cheerleader isn’t really much of a horror movie. As I said, it feels like a movie that would have been shown (and was actually) at a drive-in. At the start of Cassie’s transformations, there is a giant spider monster created when she spills some of the serum, but it is really the only horror element. The spider doesn’t really play much into the rest of the film. The movie is more about the rivalry between Cassie and another cheerleader that hates her, Britany. Britany is the head cheerleader as well as the head of the sorority that Cassie is rushing. In other words, she HATES Cassie. Their rivalry culminates into the final (topless) fight at the end of the movie between the two girls.

This movie has a lot of tits in it. Well… mainly the girl who plays Cassie, Jena Sims, tits. Sure it’s juvenile and sure it’s crude crass and also probably disgusting to talk about, but hey… I wasn’t complaining. Also, if you didn’t see it on the poster, this movie was produced by Roger “Love Me Some Titties” Corman. So that should explain the above statement. I have seen a lot of actual horror movies from the 80’s and 90’s and this year there was a real lack of naked breasts. Not so anymore. As I said, there is a fight scene at the end of the movie between the two girls that just becomes a topless slap-fest. Cause really… why not. The girls are all great looking and I was not about to turn down the invite.

Is Attack Of The 50ft Cheerleader a horror movie? No. That goes against both what Netflix and Amazon Instant Video would have you believe. Does the movie suffer because of this? No. It’s a mindless movie that harkens back to the days of dumb teen scream movies and 3-D drive-ins. The one shining point (aside from the last paragraph) is the actor that plays the quarterback. That guy, made me laugh every time he was on screen.
