Awaken is a movie that is far from original. It’s been made a hundred different ways, just this time it’s with a cast of people that would create the response “Oh, that guy.”

Waves gently break on the white sand of a tropical island. A cool breeze blows across the body of a beautiful brunette lying on the beach. Her eyes slowly open, and she is immediately filled with terror. Where is she? How did she get here? Billie Kope has just woken up into a nightmare, but she is not alone. She and her newfound companions are living in total fear of being hunted down as part of a privatized organ farm. Awaken is far from original, and it really doesn’t introduce anything original into a tired genre of films. Like “The Island” before it, and probably many more before that (Clonus anyone?), the premise of the film revolves around humans fear of death, and the need to make sure loved ones live as long as they possibly can. This will likely be the shortest review I have written for this marathon, as there is almost nothing to say here that will make this movie any more interesting. It’s not a bad movie, but conceptually, it’s just boring. The strangest thing that it does is have Daryl Hannah star as some type of female mob boss(?). When her character is introduced she TOWERS over the rest of the cast. Then, just one scene later, she is seen as just a normal height person. It’s bizarre. Awaken also “stars” the other London brother Jason London, Edward “T2” Furlong, Vinnie Jones, and Robert Davi. No real reason to see this “thriller” of a movie. Honestly the most remarkable thing in this movie is that randomly Benny “The Jet” Urquidez shows up as Billie’s father. For those of you that don’t know who he is, look him up. He’s an amazing martial arts fighter that has appeared in a myriad of HK action movies over the years, and a few American action films as well.
