Review: “Bingo Hell”

That’s too many letters for a personalized plate. Just sayin.

Usually, I am all in for the Netflix originals, this time I went with an Amazon original movie. Did I win, or should I have flipped my card?

In the small and shambling town of Oak Springs music plays on an old record player as a man dances around his house talking to the memory of his recently deceased wife. He has finally sold his place and is ready to move on. He seems happy, but there is something off about his actions and it soon becomes apparent that he is hallucinating. With his death, the town of Oak Springs is opened up to a whole world of trouble.

Lupita is a VERY bull-headed and strong Spanish “grandmother”, and she and her friends in Oak Springs have been together for many many years. They have cleaned up the town from being overrun by gangs and drugs, and have seen it fall mostly into ruin as it is now. Through it all, they have been together and able to handle everything. That is until Mario goes missing, and his Bingo Hall changes overnight into the bawdy house of flash and temptation that it is now. Once again it is up to Lupita and her friends to clean the place up and again become the winners they once used to be.

For the record, I actually really like this movie. I just want to get that out there from the start. This feels like a movie that would have been made in the late 80s early 90s. There is enough gore and violence without suffering from the early 2000s plague of just being “torture-porn” a la Eli Roth and those that came after him. Like a Troma movie with a budget and much better writing.

Bingo Hell might not be the best horror movie out there, but it has its heart in the right place. For better or worse, it’s a Blumhouse production and it shows. I have had this one on my list to watch for a while and only just got around to watching it this year. Much like every other horror movie out there, tastes will vary, but given my love of all things “retro” and bringing them into the present I was very pleased to add this one to my recommended list. There are good ways to do modern retro (like “The Babysitter”) and bad ways to do it (like the more recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre), for me anyway, this one easily falls into the latter. I don’t know if it will be available to watch any other place than Amazon Prime video, but if you have access to it, give it a shot.
