Review: “Blades”

Once again I dive head first into the murky waters of Troma. Blades came out nine whole years after Caddyshack, but the influence that movie had on it, is clearly apparent. However, where Caddyshack had lots of talent, a decent “plot” and wonderful writing, Blades has… gimmie a second…

Well while I think on that; Blades about “Tall Grass Country Club” a golf tournament and a bunch of people dying. A new golf pro Roy Kent,  is hired and ready to take his job drumming up some publicity for the new golf course as well as the upcoming tourney. The problem is that someone, or something, is killing people all over the course. The people think that it is the ex-groundskeeper doing it. The truth of the matter is that it isn’t a person at all.

Blades is a movie that is a mash-up of so many different movies that it really doesn’t know what it wants to be. As the story is told it is made apparent that the killer is actually a sentient lawnmower. A lawnmower that killed the previous groundskeepers father, and now it is back and wants more blood. In a way it’s a mix of Christine, Maximum Overdrive, Caddyshack and a little bit of Jaws thrown in for good measure.

Much like every other Troma movie, it stars no one, and is obviously made to cash in on some popular aspects of other movies. Troma in the eighties was known for being over the top and outrageous, nothing so ridiculous as the current crop of Troma movies, but still. Anyway, Blades is actually pretty tame as far as Troma standards go. Not a lot of blood and guts, and not a single breast shot, or fart noise (company staples). So in that respect, it is a pretty decent Troma flick. That being said, when you judge Blades against all other movies out there, even in the eighties, this was pretty lame.

Blades is probably worth having on in the background of some eighties halloween party, because it’s rather tame, but not much other reason to watch it. There weren’t really any funny parts in the film, intentional or other wise. I mainly watched it because it was a “Starz Play” on Netflix and I knew I needed to watch it soon, before it disappeared.

Oh… Blades has C4 that is strapped to the top of a killer lawnmower, detonated when it is struck by a golfball. Eat that Caddyshack!
