Review: Blood Hook

Once again I take the plunge into the deep polluted lake that is Troma. Blood Hook is not you’re usual Troma movie however, and I still am unsure if that is a good or a bad thing. Either way, it’s not every day you get to watch a horror movie about fishing, of all things.

So there is killer on the loose, but I guess that goes with out saying. At some remote lake in the what would apparently be Canada, strange things are happening to people. Apparently someone has started picking off people one by one and its up to a really weird bunch of kids to figure out the mystery. Blood Hook is kinda like a weird bloody version of Scooby Doo.

The real killer here is music. Yup, music. Leroy is a Vietnam vet with a plate in his head. Nothing so wrong about that, except that every time Leroy hears “The Devils Trio” he apparently snaps and decides to kill who ever is the cause. Seeing as how he is a fisherman, his murder weapon of choice is … a fishing pole and a GIANT lure. After he racks up several kills, one kid decides he will take him out, how will he do that? “With a treble hook at night.” So some other old guy teaches him how to cast his lure perfectly. (Seriously, I’m not making this up.) Leroy, takes the bait, if you will, and ends up coming after the kid. So they have some sort of weird fishing pole fight. Think of it like the “Highlander” only instead of swords it’s fishing bait.

This is not your usual Troma movie. It’s not over the top gory, there aren’t any boobs in it, and even the crappy puns and fart jokes are non existent. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it is a good movie, but it certainly isn’t the worst one I have seen from them. It even manages to leaving it open to a sequel, god forbid. There are so many horrible fishing puns I could end this review with, I don’t even know where to start. Just don’t get caught watching this film… Dammit.
