I hate candy corn, but this movie is alright.
Random movie that caught my eye about the worst, most depraved candy of all time… sure. I’ll bite.
The carnival of freaks is about to roll out of town. It wouldn’t be Halloween if the local group of punks didn’t head out and rough up one of the “freaks” from the show. Things don’t go as planned this time and Jacob (said “freak”) fights back. The group assaulting him gets a little overzealous and proceeds to beat Jacob to death. They flee and leave the body to be discovered by the carnival’s head ring leader “Dr. Death”. This is when a voodoo curse is placed on the body of Jacob, turning him into a zombie killing machine. However, it’s not the brains of randoms that he wants. Jacob only wants vengeance for his wrongful death, and nothing will stop him from getting what he wants.
Honestly not sure what exactly I was expecting from this movie, but it wasn’t to be impressed. I don’t quite know how to describe why I get a good “feeling” from this film. It just feels like an old horror movie from the heyday of the late 70s early 80s. Maybe it’s just the tone or maybe it’s the way it’s shot? The acting? The practical effect? Maybe it was the lighting and sound design that sold this movie for me. Everything just felt dark and grimey, but not to the point where you couldn’t tell what was happening. Some interesting things are done with the sound design to make it more impactful that really worked well. Maybe it’s just a combination of all of that in just the right proportions.
While Candy Corn doesn’t tell an absolutely unique story, I do feel like it tells one that has been lacking recently in Horror; Revenge. There have been a lot of random murder machines, in horror movies recently but not that many out for vengeance. A character wrongfully killed seeks revenge and will see it through to the end no matter what. There was nothing overly-gory in the special effects (given the genre). The kills felt like they were personal to the killer himself. I might be reading into it too much but one guy had his spine ripped out because he didn’t stand up to his friend when he knew he was doing something wrong. One girl has her tongue ripped out because she didn’t say anything when she should have. I don’t know… maybe that’s just me. Either way, this is a movie I would recommend. Fun fact; No, that is NOT Peter Dinklage on the cover. Yes, as you might imagine because it is a horror movie, Tony Todd is in this film.
