Review: “CarousHell”

I was hoping to get another gem out of the same production company that put out Velocipastor with CarousHell. Sadly this one took me on a trip that really didn’t go anywhere.

It’s just another day in hell for Duke. “Hell” is a small amusement park in PA, and Duke… well Duke is a unicorn on the carousel. He spends his days going round and round with screaming, kicking, smelly, ungrateful kids riding his back.

Laurie’s mom has to go to work and that means that Laurie is now in charge of her little brother Larry, or as his sister (un)affectionately calls him “Lunchbox”. Laurie doesn’t feel like sitting at home all day with Lunchbox so she decides to take him to the amusement park. There he can run around and do whatever while she makes out with her boyfriend and posts to social media all day. Lunchbox decides to go on the carousel, and just happens to pick Duke to ride on. Lunchbox isn’t exactly nice to Duke. He slaps, kicks, and even wipes his snot on Duke. This was the last straw for Duke. He’s had enough and decides to break free of his monotonous prison and hunt down everyone that wronged him, but mostly Lunchbox.

I really wanted to like this movie, I really did. The poster caught my attention and the synopsis of the flick sold me. I’m a sucker for things going on a murderous rampage that either makes no sense (like a turkey) or doesn’t exist (a Velocipastor). Duke the unicorn seemed like a great fit into this mold, and mostly was, but the surrounding bits of the film just dragged it down.

The bits of the film that followed the unicorn directly was pretty funny. There was some 4th wall breaking lines that got a genuine laugh out of me. Some of the characters we great (the pizza guy in particular), but huge chunks of the film were grating. The party, or at least the first intro to the party, was incredibly long. I see where they were going, but it slowed the pace of the movie down to where I almost didn’t want to watch to see Duke come back into the scene. Laurie’s character I get is this wanna-be social media “influencer” but her constant dialect in that regard pushed her from “I can’t wait for her to die” over to “I just want to die”. Most of the party was good jokes stretched way too far.

As I’ve said a hundred times, I respect that these folks actually got a movie together and put it out there. I cannot and will not take that away from them, it just wasn’t for me. I would imagine that they are going to attempt to make a sequel to this film, and if that day comes, I am down to watch it. I just hope they learned some lessons from this one and don’t get stuck going in circles again.
