Review: “Class Of Nuke’em High”

Well “Tales from the Crapper” left such a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended, gross) that I needed to watch a Troma movie that I knew was “better”.

Class of Nuke’em High is another in the long line of movies that I remember seeing for the first time back when USA Network used to do a late night block of programming called “USA Up All Nite”. Those of you that remember this probably remember it fondly for the hosts Gilbert Godfrey and Rhonda Shear. Anyway, I remember watching it back then but couldn’t remember anything about it specifically.

The story follows a bunch of kids that go to high school right next to a nuclear power plant. The plant is run by a dude that basically doesn’t care about safety and only wants to make money. Think of him as a fat version of Mr. Burns from the Simpsons. So over the course of the movie there is a toxic waste spill that effects the kids. Some of them go nuts, like for instance the “Honor Society” that turns into a motorcycle gang. Other kids just mutate, and one particular nerd flips out, and melts after drinking contaminated water. By the end the gang is running the school and it’s up to one jock and his girlfriend to stop them… with a little help from some freakish monster.

It’s a Troma movie, but probably one of their better produced and shot movies. It doesn’t appear to be made from old VHS tapes spliced together in someones basement. The apparent budget for the movie was a whopping 2 million dollars. There are the occasional issues with continuity, but that’s just ridiculous to worry about in a flick like this. Lloyd must have farmed this one around about the same time he was doing Toxic Avenger, or perhaps toxie was the reason for the large budget for this one. Either way, as Troma movies go, this one looks good. Nice use of sets and special effects. If you have never seen it, it’s worth a watch, if for no other reason then to see what Troma used to put out when they cared.
