My history with Troma movies notwithstanding, I decided to dip back into their catalog. It’s only been ten years since I watched a Nuke ‘Em movie, that’s time enough to check out the sequel.
Some time after the original reactor and school went under, a new nuclear reactor and a new college are built on the very spot the old school once languished. It’s a new reactor, a new school but it’s business as usual. One of the professors, Dr. Holt, is experimenting with creating emotionless creatures to do menial jobs around the school. She calls them “Subhumanoids” and things with them go well, except when you consider they are prone to the titular “meltdown” which causes the subhumanoid to literally melt into a pile of goo and from it emerges basically a talking hairball. A reporter for the school paper (Roger Smith) uncovers the story and wants to let everyone know what is going on after he falls in love with a subhumanoid named Victoria.
Troma movies have never been of a caliber that would get them any sort of recognition from the academy or even the local press. From the mid 80s until the early 90s they were known for making bad movies with a minimal budget and even less talent. However, these flicks from this certain time period have generally been okay to watch. Sure they are gross, juvenile, exploitation films, but they are fun to watch. My first exposure to them was likely USA’s “Up All Night” programming. As a kid, I remember watching these thinking they were great. As an adult, well… my tastes have changed ever so slightly.
Nuke ‘Em High 2 takes everything from the first movie and attempts to cram an actual plot into the story. It’s not great, but for what they were already working with, it’s fine. There’s enough skin and gore to check all those boxes. It’s not going to set the world on fire, in spite of setting the fictitious world of Tromaville on fire. If you are a person that has enjoyed the Troma movies of this particular time period, it’s worth checking out. Also, it’s entirely free on YouTube.
