Review: Costum Quest: Grubbins On Ice (XBLA DLC)

“Grubbins on Ice” is the follow-up DLC for the XBLA mini role-playing game “Costume Quest” from Double Fine Productions. It aims to capitalize on what the first game created with some fresh costumes and a new scenario to play through.

Much like the original content in Costume Quest, you play as either Reynold or Wren. However, this time you are out to save Lucy, a friend, from the evil Araxia. Araxia is one of “Big Bones” head honchos charged with finding more candy and more kids. The difference this time is that Araxia isn’t a big fan of the Grubbins, and they aren’t a fan of his.
When you happen into a portal to the Grubbins world you are met and swiftly defeated by several monsters. Once you make your way into town, you find that the Grubbins are looking for a leader to start a revolution in Repugia AGAINST Araxia. Who better to fill that position than a bunch of over-imaginative children with outrageous costumes and a penchant for all things candy.
If you played the original Costume Quest your level, costumes, and items will all transfer into the Grubbins on Ice add on. However, you will be given the opportunity to build new costumes (including a Pirate and Giant Eyeball) as well as several more battle patches. The level cap is bumped up to fourteen and is pretty easily reached.
For five dollars you can’t expect but so much, especially given that the first part only came out a bit more than a month ago. It took me about 2 hours of constant play to finish the story and only a little more than that to get all the achievements. That being said, it is still an enjoyable add on. It’s still from Double Fine, so you can still expect the same brand of writing and humor.
My only gripe is that they didn’t make ANY changes to the core gameplay. I wasn’t expecting a massive change in everything, however, something to make the combat feel fresh apart from the new costumes would have been nice. I’m not sure if I am imagining things or if I have just become more used to 60fps games but the add on seemed to be a little more sluggish and choppy during battles but that could just be me.
All in all, it’s a solid update to a title that I thoroughly enjoyed the first time around. If you already own Costume Quest and have a spare $5 laying around it’s worth checking out, and once again, it’s super easy to get all the achievements/trophies out of this one.
