Review: “Creep Van”

Did I just watch two movies, back to back, that were about killer vehicles? Apparently, I did. This one is slightly on the other side of the spectrum from Road Train, though.

Campbell  can’t hold down a job because he has no car, and he can’t get a car, because he can’t hold a job, it’s a vicious cycle. As he once again takes a dead end job, this time at a car wash, Campbell finds a van that he thinks will solve all his problems. Unfortunately for him, this van will be detrimental to his entire life.

Creep Van stars pretty much no one, unless you’re familiar with “Gay Robot”, a unsuccessful pilot from Nick Swardson. I would agree that this movie is an homage to the movies of horror movies of the 80’s but it’s missing… something. I know it sounds like a cop-out but I really can’t describe what’s off with this movie. Something just didn’t fit well. Maybe it was the appearance of Lloyd Kauffman that soured the whole experience for me. Maybe I needed more motivation on WHY the guy was killing people with his van. I don’t know. Also, for a movie about a van that literally almost every character said looked “like a rapist or child molester owned it” there sure were a lot of hot girls flocking around it.

This movie is strange. It reminded me of all those movies I used to watch late at night when USA Network (showing my age a bit here) would run it’s “USA Up All Night” marathons of movies. Gilber Godfreid and Rhonda Shear would tell me about how campy and dumb a movie was, then I would watch it and enjoy the hell out of it. Creep Van at times was full of camp and schlock and was pretty dumb, but at other times it was completely serious and just didn’t fit the rest of the film.

I don’t know if I would recommend anyone else watch this, but I don’t think I would steer anyone away from it either. Aside from the fact that NO ONE is afraid of the van, and the ending feels kinda rushed, Creep Van is put together well enough. Again, if this movie were to come on again in a midnight movie marathon, I’d probably watch it again. I dunno, maybe it’s not bad. This movie is strange.
