Review: “Damned By Dawn”

I only watched this movie because of the name, and the “box quote” they decided to put underneath it. Implying that your movie is a replacement for a sequel to a beloved franchise is very bold.

CLaire hasn’t seen her family in almost 18 months, now she is about to see more of them than she wanted. Claire goes back to see her father, sister, and ailing grandmother on their family farm with her boyfriend Paul. Along with an apparent secret that she is pregnant, Claire brings with her an urn and strange cryptic directions. As she visits with her grandmother she finds out that there will be another visitor, a “Banshee”. Claire doesn’t think much of it until that night she hears a unnerving scream coming from outside.

Not content to let the banshee take her grandmother away from her, she pushes the spirit off the balcony essentially killing her. Well this doesn’t exactly work out well for Claire and the rest of the family. As the banshee scream… and screams, she literally wakes the dead. They start killing everyone.

There wasn’t a whole lot about this movie that was worth seeing. What this movie does do well, really well in fact, is introducing the Banshee. The first time you hear her scream is really pretty creepy. Other than that, this movie is just shaky cam close-ups and a shit load of fog. It’s like the props guy paid too much for the machine and the producer said that if they paid that much, they were gonna get their money’s worth. As the story attempted to wrap itself up, everything got a bit foggy as well. I still am not exactly sure HOW the story wraps up. That is also the major issue with the movie in general.

Damned by Dawn in the end was not what it claimed to be. There was a no humor what so ever in the film, which is a staple of the Sam Raimi films. This film also lacked quite a bit of style. In the end it just made me want to watch the original Evil Dead trilogy. I guess if you are really hurting to see a knock off of those films it will work in a pinch, but you’re better off with the real thing.
