Review: “Darkness Falls”

There are a lot of movies out there that play off of fear, mostly fears that we most likely had as children. Darkness Falls takes it one step further and actually CREATES a fear from childhood moments.

In the 1800’s there was a woman that kids would take their recently lost teeth to, in exchange for a gold coin. Years later, a fire in her house caused her to not be able to go into any type of light. After that she was unable to go outside and was forced to wear a mask to hide her scared face. Two children then go missing and the town falsely accuses her. She is tried and then executed. In her dying breath she curses the town of Darkness Falls and all its inhabitants. Stories begin to circulate among children that she comes in the middle of the night and takes your teeth, if you see her she will kill you. The story then picks up with Kyle, Caitlin and Michael. When Kyle was a child, he saw the tooth fairy and so did his mother. He was able to escape her, however his mother was not so lucky. Years later his childhood friend Caitlin’s little brother Kyle, is haunted by the Tooth Fairy. Kyle takes it upon himself to help Kyle and pretty much all the children of Darkness Falls and destroy the tooth fairy.

I never had a fear of the tooth fairy but if I were a kid and watched this movie, I probably would. As an adult, it’s just silly to even consider being afraid of such a strange story. I guess it’s pretty creepy. I mean it’s the fear of the unknown and fear of the dark wrapped up together. There was a lot of potential for this to be something at lease semi-special, but unfortunately it fell prey to all the usual horror movie trappings.

I did like the fact that this could have been inspiration for Alan Wake. The use of light as a weapon, always going from one well lit area to another in search of a safe haven also there is a light house. Though there were no Verizon branded cell phones or Energizer batteries. It’s decent enough I guess, but there are definitely better movies out there.
