Review: “Dead Ball”

FBhsr

I’ve seen a LOT of these Tokyo Shock movies. Most of them can be marked squarely in the “weird” category, but only a select few are as bat shit insane as this.

What would happen if “Rookie of the Year”, “Tokyo Gore Police”, and “Bad News Bears” were all combined into one movie made in Japan. This, is “Dead Ball”. Given who directed, wrote, and produced Dead Ball, I knew that it wouldn’t be long before this movie jumped off the deep end. At about the literally less that two minutes into the movie, there is a kid rocketing through the air, who then throws a baseball that makes his father explode. And so the tone was set for the movie.

Dead Ball (as far as I can tell) is a movie about a boy that is some sort of super human pitcher. After the scene described above, he vows never to throw a baseball again. Following his fathers death, he then apparently goes on a crime spree / vigilante killing spree. He murders crime bosses and rapists until he is captured and sent to possibly the worst prison ever. The prison is, again, as far as I can tell, run by a woman that is the daughter of a Nazi and obsessed with baseball. Turns out, she wants him to play for her team in an upcoming game. That’s pretty much where my understanding of the movie ends.

Once this movie really gets going, it’s basically impossible to follow. Jubei meets his teammates, he refuses to play ball, he then is forced to play ball, only to find out that the game isn’t a game, so much as it is a death match. And somewhere along the line there is a fist fight over the telephone. The rival team they are forced to play against are the worst criminals pretty much in the world, and they all happen to be really hot Japanese girls. There’s a lot of death, blood, anal fisting (yes, that’s right) and literally some salt on top.

This isn’t so much a “horror” movie in the usual sense. This movie isn’t scary like a slasher film, or a suspense thriller. It’s more of a movie that is just full of buckets of blood, guts, gruesome deaths, and well… anal fisting. It makes pretty much no sense, and the only things that kept me watching it were the hot Japanese girls, and the fact that Jubei is constantly pulling a lit cigarette out of thin air. I lost count how many times he would be standing in the middle of an open room, his hand would go off screen, and when it was back in frame, he had a cigarette. It was the funniest part of the movie.

There isn’t much to offer horror movie buffs in Dead Ball. There never really is in any of the Tokyo Shock movies. However if you are open to watching a movie that has no real plot, more blood than a GWAR show, and baseball… this may be the movie for you. If you really want to watch Deadl Ball, it’s available on Netflix Instant, and the full movie is on Youtube. Oh and don’t forget the anal fisting… of dudes, by the way.
