Review: “Dead Snow 2”

The first Dead Snow was a surprise hit with me, when I saw it five years ago. The sequel had a bit to live up to, and in several ways, it more than surpassed the original.Dead Snow 2 picks up immediately after (or just a shade before) the end of Dead Snow. Martin has just gotten away from a horde of Nazi zombies that just killed all of his friends, in very brutal ways, over some stolen treasure. In his escape he passes out from exhaustion, stress, or more than likely blood loss. When he passes out on the highway, his car goes over the side of the road and Martin ends up in the hospital as a result. When He comes to, the doctors inform him they were able to save his arm. The problem is, the arm they sewed back on, wasn’t his.

Martin soon realizes that he has to escape the hospital, at any cost. A boy sneaks into his room to take pictures of his post-op arm. The boy helps him out of his restraints and also puts Martin in contact with the “Zombie Squad”. Martin then informs the Zombie Squad that they need to get to Norway to help with him eliminate Commander Herzog of the Nazi (Zombie) German army. As Martin begins his journey to stop Herzog, he discovers that his new arm is more powerful than he thought, and far more useful than he imagined.

Dead Snow 2, much like the original Dead Snow is a truly great movie. Firstly, unlike the first, the sequel is NOT subtitled. Martin speaks in English and the rest of the case does the same. The only foreign language spoken here is the language of the zombies. On the other hand, much like Dead Snow, this movie is bloody, and gory as hell. The deaths of most of the actors portrayed within are gruesome indeed. Dead Snow 2 pulls no punches, in that department.

I struggle to think of a movie that has made me belly laugh in one scene and followed it up almost immediately with a wincing, cringe-worthy moment in the next scene. There were moments when I was literally laughing out loud at what I knew was going to happen next, and then damn near sick to my stomach. The people behind Dead Snow have never backed down from killing all types of people, in all manner of terribly bloody ways. In some ways it’s disgusting, but on the other hand, it’s kind of refreshing to see a balls to the wall approach to film-making (no balls actually hit a wall).

As with the original, Dead Snow 2 is a movie that I would highly recommend seeing. If you have yet to see the first, do so, then follow it up by watching this one. I was not disappointed in the least by the film. From the opening credits to the very end, I wasn’t able to do anything else but be glued to the tv, waiting to see what horrible thing they were going to do next.
