Review: “Deadheads”

Deadheads

You’ll pardon the pun but the Zombie genre is pretty much dead. Deadheads goes a long way to making something really old and tired new and interesting again.

Mike Kellerman has just woken up into a nightmare. He finds himself in the remnants of a car crash surrounded by destruction and oddly hooked up to weird machines. As he stumbles out of the truck he was in, he searches for other survivors as well as answers. He finds that he is not alone but surrounded by flesh eating zombies. The odd thing is, they don’t seem to notice or care that he is there. Mike comes across Brent who is apparently a zombie as well but able to talk and he informs Mike that he too is a zombie, like it or not. As the two find their way into a bar for some food and a beer, the real story starts to unfold.

Mike realizes that he has been dead for two years. The last thing he can remember was that he was going to purpose to his then girlfriend Ellie. Brent convinces Mike that there is nothing stronger in this world than true love and he should seek out Ellie and tell her how he feels. Reluctantly Mike agrees and they set off to find her. Along the way they meet some strange characters, run from crazy dudes in bio-hazard suits and confront the very person that had Mike killed.

Deadheads manages to take the usual Zombie movie and make it fresh again. I was unsure from the beginning if I would even care to watch this movie, but mere minutes into the film, seeing where it was going, I knew it would be worth it. The sheer idea of a guy that is unknowingly a zombie, afraid of other zombies, and trying to interact with normal humans is pretty funny.

This is one of those rare movies that I was hoping to find in this marathon. Deadheads is pretty well written, and the actors effortlessly portray their characters believably on screen. Deadheads is probably the best zombie flick I have seen since Fido. Speaking of, the character “Cheese” is easily the best silent character since the titular zombie played by Billy Connolly. It’s a shame that this film will probably go largely unnoticed as “just another zombie movie” but it is far more than that. While some things go pretty much unexplained for the duration of the movie, I never found myself questioning why things were happening but rather just going with it. Even the pop-culture references that are sprinkled throughout the film are tastefully done.

Deadheads is a movie I took a chance on watching (much like the rest of the films in this marathon) that I don’t in the slightest regret seeing. Like Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, Deadheads takes what you think you know about a certain genre and twists it around to make it new and entertaining again. If you are looking for a fresh and fun take on the boring zombie movie, I highly recommend checking out “Deadheads”.
