Review: “Detention Of The Dead”

detention_dead_clip

A movie self described as a mix of The Breakfast Club and Zombieland.  Taking two great movies and mashing them together couldn’t possible have poor results… right?

Seven kids from (mostly) all different cliques in high school are all give detention for various reason. After a quick introduction, the comic relief, Asian kid, drug dealing skate-boarder finds that one of the kids has been bitten by some homeless man out front. The bite on his hand quickly goes from bad to worse, and he becomes a zombie. This all takes place inside of the detention room. When the kids try to escape, they find that (apparently) the homeless man has been biting lots of other kids, because the zombies are all over the school. A school which is still FULL of students. The detention kids then go and hide in the library. More cliche’s, deaths and horrible acting later, pretty much the entire cast is dead, and the movie ends.

I am still not sure why this movie is called “Detention” of the dead. The “detention” part of the movie is about five minuets. It seemed to me they could have just as easily called it “Library of the Dead” and it fit just as well, if not better. Anyway… this movie is not good. It’s full of predictable and terrible horror movie tropes. There were several times that I said the line of dialog before the character even spoke it. If I had never seen a zombie film before, or the Breakfast Club, maybe… MAYBE this movie would be ok.

The one thing that confounded me about Detention Of The Dead was the ending. After all is said and done, and yes, I’m going to spoil it, the Goth chick and the nerd go to kiss. The cheerleader pops up behind them and attacks the nerd. As they fall to the ground presumably while she eats him, a woman on a megaphone can be heard saying “Attention all shoppers! Attention all shoppers!” aaaaaaand … credits. If anyone can help me with this one, I’d appreciate it. It makes no sense to me what so every. My only thought is that it is a call out to Dawn Of The Dead, since that took place in a mall.

Detention of the Dead was a free rental from Xbox Live for the weekend. It was worth that price, except that I feel like that is two hours of my life I will never get back. Bad acting, retread plot, nothing in the way of special effects worth mentioning, much like the rest of the film. The Breakfast Club mention is more ripoff than homage, however, it’s less Zombieland and more Shaun Of The Dead. Even then, it’s a very VERY loose reference. The only time I laughed, inexplicably so, was when the Guidance Councilor zombie shot himself in the face. I don’t know why it struck me as funny. It certainly is not worth watching for one scene. Stay away from this movie.
