Review: Dragon Wars

dragonwarsposter

“They’ve made our world their battleground.” Sounds like so much more than it actually was. More like a 20-30 square mile area of somewhere in California, a place where stuff happens. Also, this is one of those posters that is a bit misleading. The two “dragons” don’t meet till the end of the film and it isn’t on top of a building.

Dragon Wars is about a man and a woman who’s destiny’s are forever intertwined. The man must protect the woman (or Yuh Yi Joo) so that she can be a sacrifice to one of the Dragons (or Imoogi) so that it can ascend to heaven… Dragon Heaven, I guess. But that was 500 years ago. Anyway, so the story follows Ethan and Sarah two people that never met before all this but now have to figure out a way to put an end to this “Dragon War”. You see Sarah is the next “Yuh Yi Joo” and she alone holds the key to dragon heaven. Look… I know this sounds ridiculous and all, and it really doesn’t get any more clear watching the actual movie.

Dragon Wars is a South Korean blockbuster production movie made in America. Actually it had the largest budget in South Korea of all the movies made in 2007. This really does show in the special effects for the film. Several times later on during some particularly big fights I actually found myself nodding my head thinking “well that was a neat trick”. That being said though, special effects alone can’t make a movie great, I’m looking at you Avatar. Besides the SFX in the film they must have blown the rest of the budget on sound. I say that because by the end I was damn near deaf because the movie was so loud. Seriously, it was like having someone sitting beside you blowing an air horn directly into your ear canal.

There really is nothing else note worthy about the film. The majority of the cast is nobodies except Craig Robinson, who was obviously the comic relief, and Robert Forester who played an all-knowing antique dealer. That’s pretty much it. The lead dude was Jason Behr, who people might recognize from TVs “Roswell”, but probably won’t cause it was on the WB. The lead female was played by Amanda Brooks who doesn’t appear to be in anything else but is at least easy on the eyes.

Dragon Wars is disappointing. Not that I was expecting this movie to be great, but with the amount of special effects that actually DID work, it was kind of a shame that they were crushed under the weight of the rest of the movie. If you plan to see this movie know two things going into it; One it is super loud at the end. Like I am not even joking loud. Second I still have no idea what happened at the end. It was so dark I couldn’t see who was “winning” and who was “losing”. My favorite part of the film however is the end, and I am going to “spoil” it for you. Once the girl dies she becomes this spectral, angle, type-thing. She then looks at Ethan and says something to the effect of “Don’t worry. I will wait for you.” While that sounds great in a love story, in practice, it’s pretty much bull shit. So now Ethan has to spend the rest of his life either single and pining for a ghost, or he gets hitched to another woman and has to explain it all to Sarah when ever he dies and actually meets her again. Hilarious.
