So, once again, searching through Netflix instant watch and stumbled upon this one. It’s not really the best flick I have seen so far but it certainly isn’t the worst.
Drive Thru is a romantic tale of love, and burgers, and murder, clowns, extravagance, caloric intake… and so much more. Meet Mackinzie, a girl on the virge of her eighteenth birthday and (naturally) a virgin. She wants to make her birthday special. Maybe spend it with some friends and then get laid. Problem is that her friends are all getting killed by the clown mascot of “Hella Burger”. The clowns name (not really important to the plot but still…) is “Horny the Clown”, seriously. Anyway, turns out Horny is out for blood because of some bad shit all the other parents of Mackinzie’s friends did to him when he was younger. Think of it as a Freddy Kruger kind of story except with burgers instead of you know… that stuff Freddy did to those kids.
This film is pretty brutal. I guess considering it is from the producers of a couple Saw movies that makes sense. From the deaths, to the music and the use of interesting editing styles this movie is an assault on the senses. Not really in a bad way though. I enjoyed the subtle humor that they put in. It never really takes itself too seriously, how can you with a character named “Horny the Clown”. It reminds me of the early Friday the 13th or Nightmare movies. Sure they are a little ridiculous but never over the top with the camp.
I only take issue with a couple things in this movie, two of which came up right at the end. Doused in gasoline, and about to be lit on fire, Mackinzie takes a mouth full of alcohol and blows it back into the face of the clown across a burning candle. Somehow this only manages to ignite his face and not the five GALLONS of gas covering her body. Second was how they tried to continue the story. It made NO SENSE and didn’t fit the rest of the movie what so ever. By the end of the movie I was a bit confused if this was a horror movie or possibly some strange PSA on fast food in general.
If you can get past that stuff the film has some redeeming qualities. It’s worth a watch if you have nothing better to do before Halloween. If you do watch it, sit through or fast forward through the credits to get to the outtakes. Some of them are pretty funny.
