Hey look it’s little Stephen Dorff all growed up. I actually had no idea who was in this one till it started, can’t honestly say that it would have made one difference if I had.
Fear Dot Com is a psychological thriller about… well basically a killer website. Stephen Dorff playes Det. Mike Reilly in the homicide division, I guess, they never really say. Anyway, he is trying to figure out the case of the “one that got away”. A certain Doctor that killed a bunch of girls online has been taunting him for years and he wants to solve the case. Then under strange circumstances people start dying in very gory ways. Then he meets Terry for the Dept of Health, and they begin to work the cases together. One factor links all the strange deaths together, Fear Dot Com.
So my first issue and probably the most glaring one at that, is that the website is actually FearDotCom.Com. Yup I guess they couldn’t sew up the rights to actually get Fear.com so they had to just the other. Already this movie has lost most of its power over me. It’s a good enough movie I guess. It is shot under little to no light, and most of the scenes are so warped and digitized you can barely tell what is going on. In spite of all that I was able to follow the story enough to know where it was leading me.
A few of the scenes were written pretty poorly. The mostly contradict each other and it only makes you feel like “Oh, yeah. This is a movie huh.” Like the fact that both main characters are explicitly told that if they go to this site they will die, yet both of them insist on doing so. The end confrontation scene was pretty well portrayed. I liked the way that Det. Mike ended up getting payback on the Doctor in a rather unique way. Though the final ending of the movie is a bit vague, and I guess left up to the viewers interpretation.
Overall I guess there are worse movies out there. However with the way this movie is shot and lit I am pretty sure it gave me a headache. Or I guess it could be that all I kept thinking through the movie was why Stephen Dorff wasn’t trying to build a model rocket.
