When these two titans of slasher motion pictures were in their respective prime, this film was all anyone wanted to see. Fifteen years later it was finally realized. However, I don’t think anything could have lived up to the hype the names Freddy and Jason carry.
Years after Freddy has made his last kill, he is literally all but forgotten. This is a problem for Freddy. In order for him to have power, he has to have children to feed off of, and in order to feed off of them they have to know who he is and fear him. Freddy devises a plan. He “searches through Hell” and find someone to create fear in the kids again. So who does he go to? None other than the Camp Crystal Lake slasher, Jason Voorhees.
Freddy sends Jason to Elm St to kill a few kids and stir up old legends and rumors of Freddy’s return. The problem is, Jason just likes killing. He can’t stop. Just as Freddy is about to make his first real kill in a dream, Jason kills the girl before him. This is something that Freddy won’t stand for. Thus begins the battle of two of the biggest names in slasher cinema history.
First off, let’s be honest with each other here, this movie was NEVER going to live up to our hopes and dreams. There was never going to be a giant battle of legions of dead kids. Each killer commanding their own forces as they march into battle… though that does sound kinda cool. With a combined total of twenty plus movies, fans have had years with each respective series and plenty of time to dream (no pun intended). No director, no actor, production company on the planet could have brought all our wishes to fruition.
Having said all that, and really realizing what this movie is (a campy horror movie), Freddy Vs Jason is actually a decent movie. Watching this with the purpose of strictly analyzing it, you have to appreciate that they made two really distinct films in one. Each time you see the two separately on screen the film caters itself to their legacy. Freddy’s sections are all industrial, and lit with an over abundance of red light. A staple in his films. Seeing Jason making his kills are all very organic, dimly lit and viciously brutal. Freddy is all about the campy jokes and humor. Jason is silent and sometimes inquisitive when he kills.
This is by no means my favorite horror movie, or even movies in the respective series, but on it’s own its as good as you can realistically expect it to be. Naturally the end of the film leaves it open to a sequel, however I doubt this will ever happen. Seeing as how both Friday The 13th and Nightmare have both had reboots recently, maybe in another twenty years we can expect to see a rebooted version of Freddy Vs. Jason. Maybe then who ever directs it will be able to bring true fans visions of an apocalyptic “fight to the death” to life… so to speak.
