I headed back to the Louisiana Bayou to check in on how Victor Crowley and the “Hatchet” franchise did after the first wonderful movie.
Immediately after the events of the first movie, the lone survivor, Marybeth Dunston, is rescued and taken away from Honey Island. In the home of another local resident, Jack Cracker, she tells him how she went to the island to find her brother and her father. Marybeth reveals that her father was Sampson Duncan, and Jack immediately yells at her to go. She objects as she has just escaped a hatchet-wielding maniac in the swamp he wants her to go back into. He tells her she has to leave but if she has questions she needs to talk to Rev. Zombie.
Back on the streets of (what appears to be downtown New Orleans) and safe for the time being, Marybeth makes her way back to the doorstep of Reverend Zombie. He is surprised to see her back alone and inquires where the rest of the group is and where his employee Shaun and more importantly his boat is. Marybeth lays out the entire story of how they got stuck, went inland and then were all hunted and killed by Victor Crowley. She wants to know how her father fits into all this. Rev. Zombie tells her the story of Thomas Crowley, his sick wife, and the nurse sent to take care of her. How she was ill for so long, and how the nurse grew close to Thomas until they were in a relationship themselves. When his wife finally passed and they thought the secrecy was behind them, his wife woke up almost possessed and placed a curse on Thomas, the nurse, and their unborn child. When Victor was born he was so deformed and hideous that his mother died upon seeing him. His presence was enough to cause the swamp to begin to die. Then one night local kids came to the Crowley’s and burned the shed down. In an attempt to save Victor from the burning house, he inadvertently struck him in the head with the hatchet he was using to cut down the door, killing him. Marybeth’s father was one of the three men who were there that night and burned down the shed. Victor has been seeking revenge in the swamp that surrounded his house ever since.
Admittedly, it has been since 2011 since I watched the original Hatchet, so my memory of that movie is a bit hazy. However, I do remember really enjoying the movie. The sequel is much the same. It is just pure slasher horror almost at its best. Kane Hodder reprises his role as Victor, and his father Thomas, and keeps the intensity at full. This flick is gory and full to the brim with blood. I don’t really know what else needs to be said here, honestly.
I really enjoyed the fact that the sequel picks up directly after the first movie. In fact, it kind of overlaps it a bit. This doesn’t always work in films, especially horror movies, but I think it works well here. Marybeth is never out of danger for long and so it keeps the terror level high from the opening credits till the end. This is NOT a movie for the squeamish around blood. The kills are all very brutal, animalistic, and as bloody as they can possibly be. Highly recommend watching the first and follow it up closely with this one. I can’t speak for the next two, but hopefully, they keep the pedal to the metal as well.
