Review: “Hawk & Rev: Vampire Slayers”

Well, it’s another year of Halloween, and another chance to find some of the best and some of the worst movies out there… and the rare case of a movie that’s just alright.

Let’s get the pleasantries out of the way early. This is year thirteen of me doing this. That’s right… lucky 13. I have given myself over to the movie gods at this point and just let the tidal wave wash over me. Be that good or bad, only the movie roulette wheel knows. All that I can hope for is that I will find something that I can recommend to folks wholeheartedly and hopefully not watch something that I will be completely ashamed of. So let’s get this party started.

I present to you Hawk & Rev: Vampire Hunters.

Hawk is a vampire hunter… that lives in a tent in his parent’s backyard. Or rather, he did until he got evicted. Hawk only really has two things in his life; his current job guarding an empty warehouse, and his one and only friend, Rev. Hawk has gone through a lot of stuff in his life, but none of them compares to him stabbing a fellow soldier to death with a 2×4 because he had turned into a vampire. Naturally, no one believed him and he was sent to prison. Hawk was doing his best to just stay alive until the day when the vampires showed back up at his place of employment. He knew he only had one choice and that was to eradicate them and save himself, his job, and possibly the world. Hawk immediately calls his one and only friend Rev and the two of them concoct a plan of action… with certain limitations.

Hawk & Rev isn’t a bad movie. It has charm and in certain parts is pretty funny. Honestly, my first thought, once it got going, was that it felt like if Kevin Smith’s first movie had been a horror comedy it would have turned out like this. Sure there were several “groaner” moments, but what movie doesn’t have that anymore? It’s free with Prime movie and as such didn’t cost me anything extra to see it. If you have prime it is probably worth checking out. I wouldn’t say it does anything remarkable that HAS to be seen, but there isn’t anything that made me want to actively shut it off. It’s a good movie for background chatter and one that you really don’t need to pay attention to constantly to completely enjoy. I guess my only strike against it is that it clearly wants to be the next “Tucker and Dale Vs Evil”. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it just isn’t on that level either. Maybe when they make the eventual sequel…
