I don’t think that House on Sorority Row will ever be a mainstream “classic” horror movie, but it does a decent job of taking classic elements and creating at the very least a cult-classic movie.
Summer is here, and the girls of Delta Phi Whatever (not actually the name) are ready for their end of year party. The problem is that they aren’t allowed to have it in the venue they usually use. Their solution is to just have the party at their Sorority house. Usually, the old crotchety house mother closes the house up the same weekend. When the house mother finds out, she gets pissed and tells the girls they are not allowed to have the party. Again, naturally, the girls want to get back at her and prank her. As you might have guessed, the prank goes wrong… horribly wrong.
All the hallmarks of a great horror movie are present and accounted for in House on Sorority Row, they just need some refinement. It’s got a good enough story that is easy to mold a psychotic killer. The acting is good enough to sell the story and the scares. The special effects (though easily spotted) are practical and aren’t overdone here. Hell, it even has a dumb stinger at the end. I went into this movie thinking I would laugh at the nonsense and find it easy to tear apart. The reality is that it’s just good enough that I have a hard time making fun of it, but it isn’t good enough to really sing its praises.
As I said, this isn’t some cinematic masterpiece of horror, but I can see why it would most certainly have a cult following. I’ve become quite the fan of these ridiculous slasher scenario movies. Year after year I have watched more and more of these, and I always enjoy the new and crazy ways that directors and producers come up with to scare girls, and then take out the killer themselves. House on Sorority Row is a quality film that I would feel fine with recommending to friends that are already cool with slasher films.
