On a remote island somewhere in the Mediterranean, a group of attractive people are about to find out that some legends and myths are based on facts. Sexy seductive facts.
Two friends, Lucy and Kelly, are taking a well deserved vacation together in the Mediterranean. Far away from their usual fast paced daily lives, these girls just want to get away and soak up some sun. They meet up with mutual friend, Alex, and his fiance Yasmin, and look forward to spending the next few days relaxing, drinking, and having a great time. While out swimming one day, they run into Yasmin’s friend Boban, and he promises to take them to a place where they will have a lot more fun. The island of Mamula. A strange abandoned military base sits on the island, and not much else. That night the group is having drinks while they discuss their plans for the next day, when a stranger overhears them. The stranger lays out a dire warning not to go near the island. The island “is drenched in blood… stay away from it, it’s not safe. Just go somewhere else.” Naturally they dismiss him, and decide to go to the island anyway. For a movie about a “Killer Mermaid”, only one person really is shown being killed by her. This is a bit misleading, considering the title. Honestly, it’s not really a bad film. It’s acted well enough, written better than most horror movies, and the actors and scenery are beautiful. Where this movie falls flat is simply being called “Killer Mermaid”. Had it been called “Mamula Island” or something like that, it would have made more sense. You don’t even see the titular character until an hour into the movie. By the end of Killer Mermaid, it was clear the producers were setting it up to have a sequel. Blatantly obvious, really. It ends with a cliffhanger, and may never see a follow-up. As I said the rest of the film is fine, it’s just set up poorly. I will say that the best actor in the movie is the old man, Niko. He is the man that warns them of the island. His performance in that one scene was the reason I kept watching this movie. That, and maybe possibly, seeing a mermaid kill someone.
