Review: “Mutant Girls Squad”

mutant girls squad poster

I’ve lost count of how many of these Tokyo Shock movies I have seen. Let’s just say more than most Americans, and even I haven’t seen one as wacky as this. Maybe because I haven’t seen Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead… yet.

Rin is a typical school girl in Japan. She keeps her head down and tries to blend in as best she can. One day as bullies are picking on her she feels a sharp pain in her right arm. She gets into a fight with some girls and winds up in the nurses office. The nurse checks her out and finds that she is something called a “Hiruko”. The nurse speaks with someone cryptically on the phone then attempts to give her a shot. Rin Breaks free after her hand, acting of its own accord, slashes off the nurses ear. Rin runs home to her mother and father where they are awaiting her with a surprise birthday. Talking to mom and dad, she finds out that her father is a Hiruko as well. Immediately after finding this out, the anti-Hiruko task-force busts in and kills Rin’s mother and father and she barely escapes.

After a fit of rage fueled murder and mayhem, Rin passes out. When she awakens she is in a sort of Hiruko training camp with other students much like her. Over time they teach her to hone her skills and reveal that they too have strange deformities that make them part of the Hiruko. Rin’s first mission once being inducted into the clan is to kill a high ranking officer in the army that wants to wipe out the Hiruko. All goes well until she is told to kill innocent bystanders. Rin refuses and then she is hunted by the very clan that helped her.

If you have seen Tokyo Gore Police, Machine Girl, or even RoboGeisha, this is really more of the same. That’s not to say it isn’t good, but it all is of the same insanity. From the minds of Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura, and Tak Sakaguchi comes another tale of super-cute Japanese girls killing mutated freaks. Lots and lots of blood and strangely mutated genitals. If you have a weak stomach, these are not the movies to watch.

Mutant Girls Squad is over-the-top in just about every way possible, which is pretty much the norm in this type of movie. Acidic breast milk, sure. Rocket propelled severed limbs, yup. Cock swords, you betcha. The story between Rin and her nemesis turned ally Rei is duuuuuuumb. but it works in the context of the film. There is so much blood, guts and oddly mutated features in this movie it’s hard to keep up, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. It’s like if GWAR were to stop making music and start making movies.

Troma movies can learn a lot from these films. As I said, I have seen a lot of these types of movies and they just keep getting better. Production values alone are always better than the previous year. Sure the genre is pretty niche but the fans (myself included) are always looking for the next title these guys are attached to. I won’t delude myself into thinking that this film will turn people into fans, but if you already like them, this is more of what you already love.
