Review: “Night of the Demons (1988)”

When I was in high school I never really got invited to parties. It didn’t bother me much because I was more of a homebody anyway. But if this is what parties were like, then I am certainly glad I never went.

A group of friends decides to get together on Halloween night and have a party. They don’t want to have just any party though, they want to have one that they can get wild at, and something that they will all remember. Well… they got it. Angela and Suzanne set up to have a party at the abandoned mortuary and invite their friends; Stooge, Roger, Helen, Judy, Jay, Max, and Frannie. they all meet up at the house only to find that Judy’s Ex heard about the party and beat them there with his friend Sal. The group decides that they should just have the party even with the uninvited guests.

Angela wants to have a seance as a fun party game on Halloween night. They find a mirror and Angela tells them all to sit quietly in front of it and wait for the mirror to go black then it will show them something. Judy is the only one that sees anything and what she sees is a horrible looking demon. She screams and the mirror falls over breaking into a hundred pieces. The rest of the group is bummed the game didn’t work, but won’t let that keep them from having a good time. They each break off in groups and explore the mortuary more. What they find is that something else in the house is also looking for them and they quickly realize this was all a bad idea.

I like a movie that doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to the meat of the film. From start to the time when things go bad is about 10-15 minutes long. Night of the Demons jumps in head first with the tropes and doesn’t let up till the blood has all been spilled and the credits roll. From the old man foreshadowing they will all die horribly to kids completely over-looking the fact that the road they just came in on is now gone. The slutty cheerleader, the gross fat kid, the greaser… Night of the Demons has it all. Also, it’s blatantly apparent that the director was a BIG fan of Sam Rami and Evil Dead.

While I don’t think this is gonna break into my top 25 movies of all time, it’s still a fun dumb watch. Night of the Demons would be a good movie to have on in the background at a Halloween party, provided that party is cool with a long lingering boob shot. There is plenty of silly practical effects, screams, blood, if it was a thing in horror movies in the 80s, it’s in here too. I was unaware they made a bunch of sequels to this one, so I guess I will have to hunt those down and watch them too, at some point.
