Review: “Rings”

Since this series started back in 2002 I have been of the firm belief that it is a comedy series. I saw the second one in the theater and laughed pretty hard through a lot of it. I am glad that the third installment did nothing to sway me from this.

By now you should all know the plot of the Rings movies. Someone watches a “tape”, gets a phone call telling them they have 7 days before they die. That person needs to get someone else to watch the tape or Samara climbs out of the television and kills them. The new “twist” here is that a professor at It Doesn’t Matter University found himself a VCR at a flea market. When he takes the VCR home it has a tape in it. Somehow he knows what he needs to do and then turns that into a sort of underground class project. He has students all over campus watching the tape and then has personal timers for all of them. One of his students watches it, there’s a lot of drama and his girlfriend then comes to IDM University to help him finally stop Samara once and for all.

Rings is dumb. The whole series is dumb. I guess it’s just one of those movies (series) that I just can’t suspend all disbelief to watch. There are so many plot holes that I can’t go into them all. Samara is a cool idea. The original movie was an interesting idea until they set about to “finish off” Samara. Every scene (at least for me) was highly predictable and well-worn content. The idea that Samara’s mother was raped and held captive by a priest was actually the plot of another movie I have reviewed here. I just don’t get why they had to make a third movie after fifteen years after the first movie and 10 years after the second film.

Would I recommend someone watch this film? Sure… but only for the fact that it is nonsense. Also having Vincent D’Onofrio in your movie makes it already more watchable than most. It has a “twist ending” that was as predictable as the rest of the film and likely sets up something else to come out in another 15 years. So I guess maybe keep up with it so you’re aware of how we got from part 3 to 4. It’s a big-budget horror movie. It was released and made a profit, so I guess it has that going for it.
