Growing up in the country, these things always creeped me out. Now that I am much older, and at least a little bit wiser, I don’t think the fear factor holds up.
A “team of commandos” has stolen a very large sum of money, hijacked a plane, and is on their way to freedom. Mid flight one of the team decides to take the money for themselves and go rouge. Parachuting into what appears to be an abandoned farm he attempts to get away. What he didn’t count on was the fact that the farm is full of scarecrows, and the scarecrows are full of more than just straw.
Looking for the money, and revenge the rest of the team parachute in, or land via the plane. What they find is that they too are getting picked off one by one. The team of elite commandos is literally cut down by a bunch of evil scarecrows. Only one of the team members and the daughter of the pilot manage to get away.
Once again, as with other movies in this marathon, one segment of the movie is particularly creepy, but the rest doesn’t follow suit. The titular scarecrows are pretty damn creepy looking. They look like at any moment they will come to life and cut your head off. Unfortunately, the dopey humor of the rest of the movie really doesn’t do them justice. I don’t think the humor was intended, which only makes it worse.
Scarecrows isn’t really a movie that has a lot going for it. Normally a movie with such a small cast can create anxiety and a sense of urgency given that they are constantly dropping like flies. Scarecrows doesn’t have much weight behind it though. At one point in the film they are literally picking money and straw out of the body of a team member while discussing how strange it is. Are we supposed to believe that they aren’t even considering what they are actually doing? I know it’s a movie and all, but come on. My biggest gripe is that they set up a perfectly good explanation for the situation, then blow it right at the end. This movie didn’t scare me at all, but maybe if I bought the disk, tied it to a stick and put it in a field, it might serve and actual purpose.
