Review: “Skeleton Man”

The spirit of a long dead Native American warrior rides a horse and kills marines. Also he likes to go into power plants for no apparent reason and kill everyone.

A team of super elite soldiers is sent into some area (never explained) for some reason (never explained) and disappear, or are killed. Now a second group is sent in to find the first and figure out what went wrong. What the second time finds when they arrive is that some supernatural force is killing their men and women easily and systematically.

The killer is the titular “Skeleton Man”. The story as told by a bean loving Native American “old timer” goes like this. An Indian brave was told that though he was already a proud warrior, he needed to prove himself further and bring the chief scalps. This cause the Indian named “Cotton Mouth Joe” (what?) to go into a rage and kill his entire tribe. Apparently he was either cursed or something, as it isn’t explained, and now he is an undead skeleton man roaming the woods killing all that enter.

Skeleton Man, the movie, much like Skeleton man, the character, is held together by the absolute flimsiest of threads. Through most of the movie the characters that the viewer could care less about, are constantly being killed off. No one lives long enough for us to become the slightest bit empathetic with. The Skeleton Man can pop in and out of existence at will making him impossible to kill, really.

Large chunks of this movie are almost contradictory of one another. At one point a scout mentions how quiet it is, no birds, no cars, just the wind. Then literally minutes later there is a major highway complete with tractor trailers driving on it. Which he then steals and wrecks less than a mile away. As I said the Skeleton Man can disappear and re-materialize at some distance at will. Yet, at the end of the movie, the Skeleton Man is in a power plant (again no explanation) and gets trapped inside the reactor room and is blown up. Skeleton Man also has one of the worst stingers I have seen this October. As the credits roll, they then reverse and show a five second clip of the Skeleton Man riding away on a horse. Then the credits roll again. Worst. Ever.

There were so many times that the Skeleton Man doubled back on itself that I was only half watching it because it really didn’t matter. The special effects are really just camera tricks and bad blood sprays, one or two decapitations and a lot of stabbing. The way the characters themselves are introduced is utterly laughable. Character is on screen, name, rank and title appear below… as the character themselves says all the information displayed. Nothing of any redeeming value here. I guess you could say that this is just the bare bones of a horror movie.
