Review: “Spirit Camp”

Scouring Amazon Prime free movies, I found what I thought to be a gem. ⅘ stars, and described as “Friday the 13th Meets Bring It On”, I was ready to do some cheers. Not sure that all the players actually showed up to the big game though.

It’s the first day of “Spirit Camp” and the girls of Non-descript school are all heading out to the nondescript woods to partake in some good old fashioned fun and learning. Here we meet the cast of fun-loving girls one by one. There’s Rachel, the rich bad girl, Amber the girl with the boyfriend she is infatuated with, the over-enthusiastic cheerleader, the goth girl, the fat girl, and then of course Nikki, the bad girl. To round out the group, there’s the girl that’s probably too old to be there, (both the actress, and the role) and her ridiculously gay man cheerleader. What a group of “teenagers” it is.

The girls show up to the camp and within seconds of being there run into the grounds keeper, and resident creepy hick in overalls. Moments later, they are being picked off slowly by a masked man with an axe.

Between bitch sessions, and excuses to be semi-nude, they discover the fact their numbers are dwindling, and decide they need to put a stop to all this killing. All of this while not only wearing their cheer outfits, but all within the first day.

I think in it’s well documented that I love terrible movies. I don’t normally care about production values, or casting, or really even a great story in my horror movies. However, if the acting, special effects, music, script, and nothing else in the movie can support the movie, I have to call a bad movie “bad.” Just as a side note, I’m never not impressed when people can get ANY movie made and out to the public. I know that takes a lot of work, and is something I’m pretty sure I will never be able to do. That being said, when you put your work out for public to view, you have to realize, it’s not going to be for everyone.

Spirit Camp is technically true to what the blurb said. It does have cheerleaders, and they do get slaughtered at a camp. However, that’s about where the similarities stop. It’s hard to review a movie with so few redeeming qualities. I laughed more at the movie than with the movie. The one thing I did like was the one girl had a boyfriend that she absolutely adored. She was a cheerleader, and the boyfriend was an overweight nerdy-ish guy. That speaks to me at least on some level.

The writing was pretty terrible, there were several actors that either took liberties with their role, or were told “fucking go for it”. Mainly the gay male cheerleader and the creepy groundskeeper. Neither of which really factor into anything, but they are both ridiculous caricatures of the roles. Sure there were boobs, but it’s always creepy (at least at my age) to watch a movie where they actresses portray high school aged children taking their tops off. Twenty years ago, this would have been great. Now, it just makes me feel uncomfortable.

This is not a movie I can recommend seeing. It’s not worth the trouble sitting through any part of it for the possible moment or two that made me at least snicker a bit.

There were two scenes in the first half of this movie where the same cheerleader peed in a toilet. Two. Neither of which were her death scene, nor were they really instrumental in the plot at all. Just throwing that out there for the record.
