Review: “The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu”

It’s always the movies that are just “okay” that are the hardest to review. The Last Lovecraft falls squarely in that category.

Cthulhu is real, Lovecraft wasn’t writing science-fiction, and we’re all going to die. The only hope the world has is a guy named Jeff, that works in a call center for a crappy gift basket company. Jeff is the last of the Lovecraft bloodline, and the only one capable of protecting the amulet from the Cthulhu cult known as “the deep ones” from raising the ancient city of R’lyeh and awakening Cthulhu itself. Jeff enlists the help of his co-worker/roommate/friend Charlie, and the only person they know that has any knowledge of Cthulhu, Paul, as the three try to determine the best course of action.

I see where this movie was trying to get, I can see they had their hearts in the right place to get there, but it just falls short of being a really fantastic movie. I don’t think there is one thing I can point to that would really be the linchpin that falls apart, but just something is missing. Maybe it’s one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it? It did have some laugh out loud moments. The special effects were good enough, and the story was written well enough.

Listen, I’m not saying that The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu is a bad film, but I’m also not saying someone should rush out to watch it either. I kept seeing it pop up in my suggestions for movies to watch and finally took the time to do so. I’m not sorry that I did. I would be interested in the same people actually got together again to make a sequel that this film sets up. If you have a couple hours to kill and want a good couple laughs, you can do MUCH worse than this movie.
