I have watched most if not all of these, and I haven’t seen one since the first that was as surprising, and well done.
Almost thirty years ago Burt Gummer managed to fight off and kill a species of “sand worm” never seen before. Since then, he has become a sort of legendary figure in all manner of things. By his own admission, he’s been called “gun enthusiast, monster hunter, dooms-day prepper” but what he really is, is a survivalist. In the years since his first encounters with the “Graboids” he has started his own survival brand. He has (basically) a YouTube channel, and a line of sauces for meats. While filming in Nevada one day, he is given the rare opportunity to take his hunt for graboids and their spawn, global. Burt was never really about the fame or the money, but the chance to wipe out the race of “things” that has plagued him the last several decades is something he cannot pass on.
I went and saw the first Tremors movie in the theater, way back in 1990, and loved it. I was already starting to have an affinity for monster movies, and when the original came out, it only solidified my love of these nonsensical flicks.
Tremors 5: Bloodlines is an amazing film, for what it is. Not only did it manage to turn out to be a decent movie in general, it took Jamie Kennedy and actually made him a character that was totally annoying and unredeemable. That, in and of itself, was the biggest surprise. The rest of the movie is also well done… for what it is. If you get past the fact that they refer to one of the species of creatures as “ass blasters”, the rest of it is subtle and reigned in. After seeing the basically abysmal Tremors 4: The Legend Begins, I was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed this film.
It may not be for everyone, but at the very least, Tremors 5 is a watchable movie. Burt Gummer (played by Michael Gross) has certainly aged since this series started, but he still puts in work for his part. And it bears repeating, Jamie Kennedy is adequate, and completely tolerable in this (aside from the total rip off of John McLane’s “Come to coast…” quote.) That’s pretty amazing.
