I can’t believe that I watched another Tremors movie. Just when I figured it was going to be stale and old, they shake things up again.
On s secluded tropical island a group of hunters is set up waiting for their prey. A man runs through the jungle leading the apex predator into the trap set in the middle of a clearing. The man nimbly jumps and runs through the trees and the underbrush as he eludes what’s chasing him until he reaches where the trap lays in wait. After a few tense moments, the ground shakes then explodes as a huge Graboid burst from underneath. The hunters unleash a flurry of all types of weapons. Firing automatic rifles, explosives, and poison darts into the beast in an attempt to drop it. No matter what they try, nothing seems to affect it and the Graboid disappears back into the safety of its underground burrows.
On an adjacent island, Jas and Jimmy and his crew of researchers are… researching when Jas sees an exotic big game hunter and owner of Avex-Bio Tech leave his personal hunting grounds called Dark Island. Jas and Jimmy decide to see what they were up to and take a trip over along with their friend Ishimon. When they arrive they find a large dead Graboid. However this one wasn’t killed by bullets and poison, it was killed when three smaller Graboids called “Shriekers” burst from its stomach. As the three investigate they hear strange noises in the jungle. Deciding they have seen enough they begin to run and escape the unseen monsters. While running through the jungle one of the shriekers attacks Ish and kills him. Jimmy and Jas make their escape and quickly realize what they are dealing with is a Graboid infestation and they know exactly what to do next. Jimmy sets off to hunt down the one person who can help them, Burt Gummer.
Well, here I am again reviewing yet another Tremors movie. This is number seven if my count is correct, and just when I thought the series had fully run out of steam, it managed to show me there was just a tiny bit of gas left in the tank. Apart from the fact that this is, as previously stated, “another Tremors movie” and really doesn’t offer much new in the way of a “big bad” antagonist, Shrieker Island does hold the peddle to the floor from the last couple of movies. The “final Graboid” is bigger than the last few showcased in the films and this one seems to have a vendetta against Gummer personally. The production value of this one is slightly better than most of the straight-to-video movies they have released as well. Special effects while subtle are done pretty well. I especially liked the bit in the movie when they actually introduced the big bad.
Let’s be honest with ourselves here, no one is coming to a Tremors movie for the story. I can’t believe I’m writing this again but Jamie Kennedy did a pretty good job portraying Burt Gummer’s illegitimate son in the previous two movies and I thought I would miss that here. However, Jon Heder does a really good job of being the nerdy, goofy, but somehow competent semi-hero of the film. I liked that they basically gave a throwaway line to the explanation of why Kennedy’s character “Travis” wasn’t in the film but still managed to introduce his mother in a meaningful way. The ending was surprising, however. I really didn’t think it would end the way it did, but here we are. I won’t spoil it if anyone actually cares, but I will say that Michael Gross has said if they want him back he is willing to as long as his 70+-year-old body is able.
Do I recommend this movie? Sure. With the big caveat that if you have mildly enjoyed the last SIX of these films there is something for you to enjoy. Is this the one for you to “jump back into the series” if you didn’t like anything past part two? Probably not. It’s a fitting end to what has been a series that has run a LOT longer than I ever thought it would. Also, even having said that, if they bring it back for part eight I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it centered around Jon Heder and Jackie Cruz’s characters.
