Review: “Tucker And Dale Vs Evil”

Mark my words, this movie will be an almost instant cult classic. It has all the makings of a movie that will fly under the radar with most critics and publications, but it will be known.

Tucker and Dale are two guys on a weekend trip to the mountains of West Virginia. Their only agenda is to fix up Tucker’s new “Vacation Home” do some drinking, and maybe a little fishing. Unfortunately, they stumble into a series of events that have them confused and, quite frankly, scared. They meet a group of “college kids” at a local store and the kids immediately think they are some backwoods, inbred, psycho hill-billies. It doesn’t help matters that Dale tries (and fails miserably) to talk to one of the girls and scares them off.

Tucker and Dale decide to unwind with a little night fishing and drinking. The kids happen to be going for a skinny-dipping trip in the same waters where they are fishing. As one of the girls undresses on a rock, Tucker and Dale sit quietly and try not to frighten her. Unfortunately, they do just that and she falls in the water and hits her head. Dale dives in to save her from drowning while the other kids run off scared thinking they are going to kill the girl (Allison). This is just the beginning of a series of events that will play out hilariously over the course of a couple days.

I really don’t want to spoil how the plot unfolds here, and that is probably the biggest surprise of the movie; it has a plot. Honestly, I have been waiting a long time to see a movie like this. Easily the best horror-comedy crossover movie I have seen since Shaun of the Dead. The way that the timeline unfolds and the way that things can be seen from such drastically different angles is hilarious. While one person may see someone digging their own grave, they don’t know they are actually just helping to dig “an outhouse shit hole”.

This movie really doesn’t have a lot of star power to back it up, which actually may make the movie all the better. It stars that one guy from the show that no one watched “Reaper” (Tyler Labine) as Dale, “Pirate Steve” from Dodgeball (Andy Tudyk) as Tucker, and Cerie from 30 Rock (Katrina Bowden) and the hot girl… I mean Allison.

This really is a movie that needed to be made. Seeing the movie from the “killers” perspective here, makes me want to rewatch all those old horror movies and think of it from Michael Myers, and Jason Vorhees eyes. Something that starts out as a slight misunderstanding blows up into a huge traumatic episode for all parties involved. Going into any real detail would really spoil the hilarity of actually witnessing it unfold.

If you have the chance to catch this movie, either on the big screen or at home, do it. If you consider yourself a fan of horror movies, check this movie out. This is probably the first movie that I have watched in the three years (!) of doing this marathon that I will suggest that everyone watch. I can’t say it enough this movie is great and deserves to be seen.
