Seeing that there was a complete and utter lack of Japanese gore movies in this marathon, I decided to change that, quickly. Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl is from the same people that have done, Tokyo Gore Police, Machine Girl and other “Tokyo Shock” movies, and it shows. However this one seems to have more plot than the others.
Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl is truly a love story. Monami is a recent transfer student to “Tokyo High School” and has a knack for going unnoticed by both teachers and students. She has her eyes set on Mizushima, a classmate of her’s. The problem is that Keiko also has feeling for Mizushima. Monami gives Mizushima a chocolate, but not just any chocolate. It’s a chocolate filled with her blood. Why? Because she is a vampire and she wants to turn him into a vampire as well. This doesn’t sit well with Keiko, who takes it upon herself to break up their relationship. She tries so hard to do this that she literally ends up dying for it.
With Keiko out of the way, Monami thinks she can now pursue Mizushima with out interruptions. The problem with that is that Keiko’s father is the vice principle at the school, also, he’s a mad scientist working on reanimating corpses. Thus Frankenstein Girl is brought to life. From then on it’s just a big fight to the death over who will have Mizushima as their boyfriend.
I have seen a lot of weird Japanese movies like this, and Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl doesn’t really stand out much from the rest of the crowd. Besides the fact that it is really a story of two girls fighting over their love of a boy, it’s just a movie about lots of blood and weird appendages. The school itself is just as weird as the students. Tokyo High School apparently has it’s own Eiffel Tower, and is located with a great view of Mt. Fuji.
This movie is racist as HELL. The school is broken up into at least three groups. You have the pretty ones, of which Keiko is a part of. Then there are the Cutters. By the way I really don’t understand the infatuation with Japanese girls cutting their wrists. This is probably the third movie where it is a central part of at least one characters life. Anyway, the third group is a bunch of Japanese girls that wish they had been born black. They dress in track suits, have afros, and plates in their lips. One girl says she wants to be the biggest track star in Japan. The worst of it is how they do the girls make-up to give her HUGE lips. It’s insane how far they take these group of characters. Seriously, I was more shocked at this than almost everything else in the movie.
Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl is just another in the ever growing line of over-gore movies coming out of Japan. Watching it on Netflix I was forced to watch it dubbed in English. I wonder if any of the story beats would have been different if it had been subtitled. The movie itself isn’t all that bad, and maybe worth a watch on a lazy weekend. It doesn’t pull to many punches but it’s as over the top as it could have been. If you really enjoy these types of movies, you probably won’t be shocked at anything found with it (except the racism) so it might be worth it. However, if you haven’t gotten your feet wet in the ocean of Tokyo Shock, there are better titles to start with.
