Netflix originals have once again hit on a great combination of elements to make a great horror movie, though the “originals” part is a bit questionable.
Murnau Properties is buying up and buying out people all over the Bronx. Jayden doesn’t like what he sees and thinks something else is going on. Gentrification is one thing, but having an entire burrow of NY bought up by one company to wash away any culture and repurpose it as upscale housing and development is out of the question for many. Jayden is doing his best to try and save his favorite bodega, Tony’s, from the same fate as more stores and locations than he can put a number on.
Tony’s was a home away from home for Jayden and his friends Bobby and Luis. He would go there to hang out with his friends, watch movies, play games, and just generally feel like a family. He and his friends grew up in that bodega and Jayden feels like saving it is a task that he has to rally the entire burrow behind. What better way to get a neighborhood to help out than throwing a block party to raise money? While ducking the usual drug dealers and would-be criminals, Jayden accidentally stumbles into the real truth behind his neighborhood buyout, Vampires. It seems that Murnau Properties is buying up real-estate for the purposes of having lairs for many MANY vampires to reside in. Undeterred by this new crop of issues this creates, Jayden now has to save his neighborhood from more than just suburban white ladies and lattes.
I really did like this movie. I just want to say that upfront. It’s written, directed, shot, and acted quite well. I don’t really have any issues with the movie as a whole except that I came to realize this is just a reskinned Lost Boys. Like… there’s a scene taken almost directly from the film. I guess I didn’t realize how much it mirrored the original until that particular scene, but yeah. Apart from that, I’ve got nothing to complain about here. It’s kinda cool how the Bronx itself is a/the star of the film here.
I’m sure there are more Netflix original horror movies out there, but this one being the sole film from that I have seen this year, I can’t recommend it enough. There’s enough humor as well as action to keep this movie together and going. Just really a delightful movie all around and one that I think most any casual fan of horror will enjoy.
