Review: “Would You Rather”

would-you-rather

“So you know that game where people are asked if they would rather do X or Y? What if we made that a horror movie?” That’s how this movie was made.

Would You Rather follows Iris as a desperate care-giver for her brother. Iris is offered a “once in a lifetime” offer to take all of her worries away. She is told that all she has to do is show up at an address, and play a game. Whomever wins the game will have basically everything they every wanted handed to them. For Iris, this would mean that her brother would be taken care of, and she wouldn’t have to worry about money any more either. She accepts, reluctantly, and the movie proper begins.

Iris is driven to a house in the hills of somewhere’s-ville, where she meets the man that offered her this opportunity, as well as seven other “contestants”. It isn’t long before the game is introduced to the players. They are given simple choices that consist of the titular “would you rather” style. At first, they are hard, but nothing truly sinister. Things quickly make a turn for the worst as dinner is finished and the plastic tarps are brought out.

I wouldn’t exactly say that I am a sucker for movies with strange premises, but they seem to find me, one way or another. I guess I wouldn’t say that the movie is based on a terrible plot, it’s just very “simple”. Sure, the majority of horror movies are literally based on nothing more than “kill everyone” plots, but when you set a movie up to be something more than it is, you’re asking for it.

Everything that happens in Would You Rather is predictable, in the worst kind of way. Most horror movies it’s easy to tell who’s next, and it doesn’t matter. Here, they try to build suspense for the next kill, and it just falls flat. There is no emotional attachment to ANY of the characters, and even in the high stakes game they are playing, it’s never in question what’s going to happen.

In the end, I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed. I wanted this to be a better movie than it was. The twist at the end is decent enough, but again, was predictable. Essentially the last five minutes of the movie boiled down to me yelling at the TV for the killers eyes to open. (That’s not what happens, but it was just as obvious.) Would You Rather has some decent production value, and a cast of characters you will recognize from all over the map. I guess it’s worth wasting an hour or so on, if you have nothing else to watch, but I probably won’t watch it again. Especially since the twist ending is now known.
