I’ve seen a lot of terrible movies over the last eight years or so. Some were bad because they were poorly produced, some were bad because they were poorly acted, poorly written, any number of reasons really. Yoga Hosers has a lot of money behind it. It had a good production company, good actors, and was… written I guess okay, for what it is. However, Yoga Hosers is just not for me… at all.
Kevin Smith used to be one of my favorite writers/directors, but that was a long time ago. Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, these are great movies. Smartly written, decently acted, and funny… very funny. Somewhere after that though, Smith lost me. I don’t know if I have grown up and the same things aren’t as funny anymore or what. Maybe it’s that the humor has changed and This style just isn’t for me. I don’t know what it is but the last few movies of his I have attempted to watch (Zack and Miri, Cop Out, and now this) have all fallen completely flat for me.
I had no idea who was behind Yoga Hosers until the opening credits started rolling. When I saw his production company come up I was a little skeptical. When I saw his name as writer/director, I thought maybe I will just give this a chance and let it play out. When his daughter was one of the stars doing one of the worst Canadian accents (or attempt at one) came on screen, I was doubtful. Finally when she and Johnny Depp’s kid butchered Anthrax’s “I’m The Man 91” I knew this movie was not going to go well in spite of what I might want or hoped for.
Currently, I am about 30mins into the film and am seriously contemplating if I want to go any further. The constant use of social media references and the girls being obsessed with their phones might be the final nail in the coffin. I haven’t even seen what makes this a horror movie, other than some dude getting something shoved up his ass. So far this movie feels like someone watched Scott Pilgrim (good) and Jennifer’s Body (terrible) and decided to mix the two up in some way, and place that movie in “Canada”.
If you like movies that feel more like they should have been a PSA on social media, were cast as a sort of fan service for Hollywood, and really and truly have enjoyed Smith’s movies in the last fifteen years, you might enjoy this one. For me, it’s a big let down. I feel like if someone other than Smith was at the helm, this might have been good. Maybe in my old age, I have learned that subtlety is the best kind of humor. (I know that isn’t true and is patently false.)
To be fair, this review may possibly be more reflective of my feelings on Kevin Smith and not Yoga Hosers. That being said, a bad movie in my eyes is still a bad movie, no matter the director’s history. Man… that song in the opening really set this one off on the wrong foot.
