Sometimes “based on true events” doesn’t really mean anything like it ever happened. Just goes to show that the old adage “don’t believe everything you read” is all to true. The movie wasn’t bad, just wish I hadn’t been lied to.
#7 The Haunting in Connecticut
One day I will watch a horror movie that breaks the mold. One that doesn’t just copy and paste from other movies. Until then I will just have to watch all the other imitators. The Haunting In Connecticut has everything that you have already been afraid of in other movies. Let’s hit the list shall we? Let’s see… creepy doctors? Check. Haunted house? Check. Camera shots that are too wide in order to allow for things to pop into view? Check. Things that gamers so lovingly refer to as “Monster Closets” complete with loud music hits and or screeching sound effects? Check on all counts. One other thing that I alluded to in the beginning is the fact that the movie claims to be based on true events. When in fact there weren’t really any events to be based upon in the first place. Ray Garton was contracted to write up a novel based on the events that happened to the Snedeker family in 1980’s. The book was called “In a dark place: The story of a true haunting.” However when he was doing research for the novel, and upon interviewing the Snedeker family, he found that many of their stories didn’t match up with the rest of the family. Ray then talked to Ed and Lorraine Warren, two very prominent paranormal investigators, and was told that the Snedeker’s were “Crazy, most people that come to us [Ed and Lorraine] are crazy.” He was told that he had the bulk of the “story” and that since he wrote scary books he should just fill in the rest and “make it scary.” Roy would later go on to say about the movie it self, “I suspect the movie will begin with the words: ‘Based on a true story.’ Be warned: Just about anything that begins with any variation of this phrase is trying a little too hard to convince you of something that probably isn’t true.” Coming from the guy that was paid to write about the haunting, that says a lot. I for one couldn’t agree more.
