Right about at the :20 mark was where I got pissed that I would have to buy a Wii U now.
So that was the reveal trailer for the Wii U shown at today’s Nintendo press conference. It shows a lot about the controller but nothing much else. Well that is because there are scant details about the console itself. Cobbling information from a number of different sites I will compile what we know so far.
The Wii U outputs through a HDMI out
The HD range is 480i to 1080p
It will come with a standard HDD
Will support USB and Flash storage as well
Four USB 2.0 slots
The games will be on a proprietary disc, of some undisclosed memory size
It will be backwards compatible for all Wii games (doesn’t look like Game Cube games though)
Given that there are no slots for the controllers, it would appear that the Wii U will NOT support Game Cube games. However the Wii U will be compatible with all of the Wii accessories and controllers.
Speaking of controllers. The new Wii U controller is definitely a “game changer”. The ability to use it as it’s own screen to play games without a television is pretty interesting. According to Reggie it will only work within range of the system and doesn’t work on WiFi, or BlueTooth. The specs on the controller itself are just starting to hit the web now. Here is what we know so far.
Approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long.
The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.
Still no solid date, and as said before there was no discussion of price, what so ever. This is surely the system to watch. It would be interesting to see the reaction of R&D from Sony and Microsoft to know what they will try to mimic from this system.
