X-Mas Review – “Ernest Saves Christmas”

Sometimes you want to see a movie you enjoyed as a child. Sometimes you just want to watch a terrible movie. Sometimes… those two things are the same. Know what I mean?

Hot off the heels of the success that was Ernest Goes To Camp, comes the holiday comedy that no one knew they wanted at the time; Ernest Saves Christmas. That’s right, Ernest P. Worrell is back. Ernest is a down on his luck cab driver in Orlando Florida when he picks up a man at the airport claiming to, and looking an awful lot like, Santa Claus. The man claiming to be the one and only Claus, is in Florida to see another man about having him take over the job of Santa. Think, Dread Pirate Roberts, but with more presents and cheer than thieving and death.

This movie is stupid. I mean, if you can’t already get that by the fact that it stars a guy that was famous from making a Marva-Maid character into a kids TV show. Don’t think that I didn’t love this movie when I was a kid, cause I did. However, I also loved his TV show and the first movie. Ernest movies all have the same flow to them. And much like the TV show, they all feature basically the same cast of characters if not the same core actors. Again, this is not a slight on Ernest. After all, Adam Sandler has been making literal MILLIONS of dollars tweaking his scripts ever so slightly and including just about everyone he has ever talked to in every one of his movies. … but I digress.

Ernest Saves Christmas is on the other end of the spectrum from something like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. All the while being basically the same movie, but for kids. You can’t really expect kids to understand the problems of dealing with family, bills, and planning a Christmas party. What kid doesn’t know about Santa though? It also, in a weird way, explains how Santa is able to be so “eternal”. What I’m saying is that they are both really dumb movies about “saving” Christmas, written for two entirely different viewing audiences. There are those that will say that Ernest can’t hang with the Griswolds as far as being a holiday staple, but I disagree completely. I say there is room enough at the bug dumb slap-stick comedy table to have two movies.

ps. I took the liberty of attaching the entire movie (on YouTube) for your viewing pleasure.

*Side note, the more of these Ernest movies I watch, the more I am totally convinced that Tyler Perry is ripping off his schtick. Seriously. Ernest went to jail first, and he saved Christmas well be fore Tyler Perry even knew how to operate a video camera.
